Message from First 5 Alameda County CEO, Janis Burger
After the presidential election, many of us are feeling a mixture of emotions. For many of us the potential impacts, both on the families we serve and personally, weigh heavily on us. Regardless of our choices at the polls, the most difficult part at this point in time is the uncertainty. It is unclear how the changes in Washington, D.C., but also statewide and locally, will affect us. However, it’s important to remember that issues impacting young children and their families, such as child care, are finally being recognized by both sides of the aisle at all levels of government. This is due to the persistent work of the early childhood community, including many of you, over the years. In the coming months, we will do our best at First 5 Alameda County to share with you what we know about potential policy changes that may impact the families we serve and our work. Below are some resources for families and other information we’ve gathered regarding the impact of this change in administration. We also have a page on our website dedicated to how early childhood programs fared statewide during the election. As always, First 5 Alameda County will continue our focus on narrowing disparities and improving the lives of children 0 to 5 and their families in the coming years.

New Offering: Newborn Behavioral Observations Training
The Newborn Behavioral Observations (NBO) system was designed to give parents the confidence to read and understand their baby’s cues and to promote positive interactions between parents and their infants from the very beginning. More and more, practitioners are using the NBO in hospital, clinic and home settings to help parents learn about their baby’s competencies and their baby's ability to communicate.

Last Friday, First 5 Alameda County staff helped sort food at the site of one of our partners, Alameda County Food Bank. It was a great reminder of all we have to be thankful for this year – our wonderful community partners, the diverse families we serve and all of you.
