Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas is a Filipina daughter of immigrants, a working mom, and a lifelong, award-winning organizer.

She was elected in 2024 to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to serve District 5, which includes Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, and parts of Oakland. Previously, she served as Oakland City Councilmember for District 2 from 2019 to 2024, as Council President from 2021 to 2024, and as Interim Mayor from December 2024 to January 2025. Prior to her public service, she was an organizer and nonprofit executive. She served as Executive Director of the Partnership for Working Families, the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy and Sweatshop Watch, where she successfully organized with low-wage, immigrant and women workers; helped raise Oakland’s minimum wage and secure paid sick leave; and supported community benefits agreements and equitable economic development.

Supervisor Fortunato Bas has championed community-centered policies and budgeting. As an Oakland Councilmember, she led the passage of the strongest COVID-19 eviction moratorium in California, created a fund for community land trusts to prevent displacement and create permanently affordable community-owned housing, and supported youth and families by reauthorizing the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth and supporting the creation of violence intervention programs in Oakland high schools.
