Understanding what our community’s children need to be prepared for Kindergarten is critical to determining how we can better serve them. Recently, 13 out of the 18 school districts in Alameda County provided input on what tool would best help them gather this critical information.

The representatives of the school districts expressed clear interest and excitement in a tool called the Early Development Instrument (EDI), leading to our decision made in partnership with the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), to select the EDI as our survey tool. It will be used as a key lever in our next comprehensive Kindergarten Readiness Community Study, which also includes other elements to paint a complete picture of the need, like interviews and data analysis related to neighborhood conditions.

“The Early Development Instrument helps us improve conditions for early education by identifying assets and opportunities in how our communities are preparing kids to thrive in school,” said Superintendent of Schools Alysse Castro. “The more we know, the more we can act to ensure all Alameda County students enter classrooms prepared to succeed.”
