First 5 Alameda County Hosts First 5 California Commission

The Alameda County Fathers Corps (ACFC) Celebrated its Five-Year Anniversary

The Alameda County Fathers Corps (ACFC) celebrated its five-year anniversary on June 22nd at the Richard C. Trudeau Conference Center in Oakland. More than 100 people attended the celebration, including public and community-based partners and members of the Fathers Corps Learning Community. In addition to highlighting the Fathers Corps’ work, the event energized attendees to advocate on behalf of fathers and father-figures in Alameda County. The highlight was hearing Fathers Corps members speak in their own words about the transformative power of ACFC in work and family relationships. Al Grimes, Director of the Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative in Ohio, also gave a moving speech about this important work in other parts of the country.

Empowering Quality Family Child Care in the Greater Bay Area Conference a Success!

First 5 Alameda County partnered with the Alameda Professional Child Care Association (APCCA) to convene family childcare providers from across the Bay Area for a day of sharing and learning. On June 26th, family child care providers from seven California counties came together in downtown Oakland for APCCA’s Empowering Quality Family Child Care in the Greater Bay Area Conference. The event featured a keynote from Dr. Barbara Stroud and an inspiring message from Bill Hudson, CEO of National Association for Family Child Care. In addition, the conference offered workshops in multiple languages featuring many family child care providers on business, supporting social and emotional development in children, literacy, outdoor learning, the Quality Rating and Improvement System and Help Me Grow. It’s no surprise that 87% of the attendees reported that they will do something differently in their family child care home as a result of what they learned from the event. Congrats to APCCA and all who made this conference possible, especially the generous support of CA First 5 QRIS Region 4. We look forward to convening again on May 18, 2019!

Policy Update

In July, the Alameda County Early Care and Education (ECE) Planning Council endorsed First 5 Alameda County’s Immigration Resolution, and recognized First 5 Alameda County Commission’s leadership in bringing to light how family separation policies have long lasting negative repercussions on young children and their families. The Planning Council also endorsed Senator Feinstein’s S. 3036, the Keep Families Together Act. We’re proud to be a member of a local early childhood system that is speaking out about policies that hurt our families!
