Board of Supervisors Adopt Father-Friendly Principles

Tuesday, February 3rd by unanimous vote the Alameda County Board of Supervisors adopted a new resolution in support of "Father-Friendly Principles" developed by our Alameda County Fathers Corps.

By adopting the Father-Friendly Principles, Alameda County will bring the needs of men and their relationship with their children to the forefront…,” Supervisors Richard Valle (Dist. 2) and Keith Carson (Dist. 5), co-sponsors of the resolution, declared in a letter to fellow supervisors recommending the resolution’s passage. “This is a groundbreaking, systems reform event for our County and for the entire San Francisco Bay Area region to emulate,” proclaimed Fathers Corps Co-Founder and Alameda County Public Health Dept. Fatherhood Initiative Manager Gary Thompson, in response to the Board’s action.

The seven Father-Friendly Principles are the brainchild of the new Alameda County Fathers Corps.  Corps Co-Founder and Program Officer Kevin Bremond said the goal behind the principles is that “…every father is fully engaged and supportive of their child or children and that agencies and organizations in Alameda County be fully-prepared to help them succeed.”  Fathers more involved in the lives of their children also mean stronger families and a stronger Alameda County, he added. Originally founded in August 2013 as a partnership between First 5 Alameda County and the Alameda County Public Health Dept., the Corps has expanded to now include the Alameda County Social Services Agency and the Alameda County Department of Child Support Services.

First 5, Elmo & Text4Baby Team up for Oakland

It's an exciting time for Oakland babies!  This month, First 5 teamed up with Too Small to FailText4Baby and Sesame Street to launch a free mobile health program for just for Oakland families.

Text4Baby is a popular texting program that has supported the maternal and child health of over 820,000 users.  When Oakland families sign up for the service by texting BABY (or BEBE in Spanish) to 511411, they will receive a local version of the texting program.

Text4Baby Oakland features local resources to connect families to services in their home town – such as Bananas, Inc., Alameda County Food Bank and Alameda County Healthy Homes.  Additionally, families will receive a new series of tips to promote early language development. These messages will include fun videos from Sesame Street characters with simple ways to boost their baby’s early brain and language development through everyday moments and routines.
